Wireframes
Wireframes are a skeletal version of a website, which are used to show the functionality, interaction and structure of a website. I normally produce wireframes for the designers to understand the elements necessary in to be included in the UI of a website and for the developers to understand interactions and the structure of the website. I also present the wireframes as early prototypes to the project team and the clients. Tools: Axure, Microsoft Visio, Microsoft PowerPoint and Microsoft Word.
Sitemaps
A sitemap is a graphical representation of the structure or hierarchy of a website. Using a sitemap, an Information Architect can easily show various users, where a specific page or content is located in the overall structure. Sitemaps are used by many of the project stakeholders to clarify the structure of the end product. In my work, I routinely create sitemaps for projects either at the beginning of a project (current IA) or during the course of a project (proposed IA) or both.
Content Inventory
A content inventory or IA brief is a detailed record of all content available on a site. Normally, a content inventory is performed to take stock of content for a few purposes. Typically, it is used to evaluate the content of a site in terms of value, completeness and placement. Tools: MS Excel
UX Reviews and Testing
I often perform Usability reviews on a clients existing website and products that we develop. The sites/ products are benchmarked against a set of standards and guidelines which have been predetermined based on current research and best practices. I also present these reviews to the project team and to the clients. Tools: MS Excel, MS Word, MS PowerPoint
IA Templates
In my last few roles, I have had to come up with IA templates to be used to ensure the usability of the end product. It made sense to operate this way as it was an efficient way to ensuring the quality of the end product while allowing us to work on a large volume of work. These templates made it easy for a large team to quickly develop screens for client review and for all team members to talk the same language.
